FY2022 Budget Reconciliation & Infrastructure
A flurry of meetings among top Democratic lawmakers has helped breathe life into a potential revival of the stalled reconciliation package formerly known as Build Back Better. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), the crucial holdout in negotiations, has been meeting with Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), while President Biden met with both the Senate Majority Leader and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). While these talks have not resulted in firm compromises, there is growing optimism that Senator Manchin may support a legislative package primarily geared around deficit reduction measures and prescription drug pricing. However, rumors that Senator Manchin will no longer support direct payment of tax credits for clean energy projects may signal additional threats to this title, given his concerns that these provisions may further exacerbate record inflation. The legislative calendar remains tight and filled with competing priorities, but a reconciliation deal may still be reached before the August recess.
