Negotiations over the Build Back Better reconciliation package have stalled, as Democratic leadership and Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) have taken a "cooling off period" to instead debate voting rights legislation and proposed changes to the Senate filibuster. President Biden met with both Senator Manchin and Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) on Thursday, January 13, but their conversation appeared to focus more on disagreements over Senate rules than about the Build Back Better Act. Democrats will continue to push to find compromise with Senator Manchin, but these negotiations will need to be balanced alongside a looming federal funding deadline on February 18, meaning a breakthrough on Build Back Better is not likely for the next few weeks.
