Friends,
Hope you were able to enjoy Memorial Day and pay respects to those gave their lives for our freedoms. And while it also serves as the unofficial beginning of summer, unfortunately for us, it didn’t feel like it with the cold and rain both Saturday and Sunday in NYC. The cicadas are cranking it up outside my house (so noisy), but not as loud as the 140,000 fans and roaring race cars at Sunday’s Indy 500, won for the fourth time by veteran Helio Castroneves. The Memorial Day weekend also means NCAA Lax Championships and yesterday Virginia defeated UMd 17-16 in a thrilling game that secured UVa’s 2nd straight national championship. On the women’s side, BC knocked off Syracuse to win its first after numerous trips to the finals by knocking off Syracuse 16-10. Lindenwood MO (DII) and Salisbury MD (DIII) both captured women’s titles as well while LeMoyne NY (DII) and Rochester Institute of Tech NY (DIII in 2OTs) won men’s titles.

And following last Friday’s visit by Energy Secretary Granholm to Air Liquide’s hydrogen plant in LaPorte Texas, this Friday, Air Liquide officials will join Senator Carper at 1:30 in its Delaware Innovation & Research Center in Newark to discuss his new hydrogen tax legislation.
The last jewel in Horse Racing’s Triple Crown is set for Saturday. We just had the post draw for the 8 horse field at 11:00 am today with Essential Quality as the early week favorite. Medina Spirit will not run after the NYRA banned Bob Baffert. The race has a lot of horses I like including Hot Rod Charlie (3rd in KY Derby) Rombauer (Preakness Winner), Known Agenda, Bourbonic and Rock Your World (his poor Derby performance killed my bets), who landed the 7 spot and will be likely to set the early pace on Saturday. Waiting for things to shake out, but my early thinking is a 4-2-3 Box with wheels on 7, 1, 6 to mix it up… See more here from Horse Racing Nation.
Seems like we are finally starting to get back to normal. Hope you stay safe & healthy and get those vaccine shots if you can.
Best,
Frank Maisano

“We would see significant disruption in power supplies, transportation systems...and significant rise in energy taxes.”
The International Gas Union secretary-general Andy Calitz in response in the Financial Times to the recent IEA report which questions the role of gas, warning that the road map could present a serious risk to energy security.

Security Expert Deep Sea Minerals Essential to Critical Minerals for Energy Transition – In an interview with Bloomberg Radio’s Balance of Power with David Westin, former USS Cole Commander and national security expert Kirk Lippold discussed supply chain shortages and clean energy. Lippold says we have to be able to balance the resources necessary to go green. He adds that deep sea minerals are another alternative that can help solve the problem.

Former EPA Science Board Chair Pushes Back on Regan Purge – In an op-ed in the Washington Times, former EPA Science Advisory Board Chair John Graham writes that Regan's action undermines balanced expertise, which is crucial to proper review of the new policy priorities that President Biden has set for EPA. As he explained to new EPA administrator Michael Regan, it could have been accomplished without the political purge and without the dangerous precedent that has now been set. A key pillar in SAB’s independence is the staggered three-year term, where no more than one third of the scientists on SAB are replaced each year. Members willing to serve a second 3-year term are normally reappointed. This has made it impossible for new EPA administrators to do precisely what the Biden EPA is likely to do: stack the SAB with their policy allies in the science community. The Biden EPA says they will allow all 42 purged scientists to “recompete” for their positions, but the final decisions on those members will also be made by the same Biden appointee.
ClearPath/CATF: Colorado Can Get to Clean Energy Affordably – ClearPath Action Executive Director Rich Powell and Clean Air Task Force (CATF) Executive Director Armond Cohen penned an op-ed in Colorado Politics on how Colorado can lead the way in making the transition to 100% clean energy. They write between Colorado’s abundant lands, renewable and fossil resources; innovation leadership in the great universities and NREL; and commitments to clean energy from utilities and policy makers, the state stands uniquely positioned to build an energy innovation ecosystem across multiple technologies, and reap the benefits in jobs, investment, and corporate and manufacturing location to take advantage of the state’s clean power.

Murray: Rare Earth for Renewable Will Be a Long Road – Former EPA speechwriter and energy Journalist William Murray wrote about America’s journey to acquire a rare earth supply chain in his piece: U.S. Rare Earth Independence from China Still Has Years to Go, Experts Say. Rare earth minerals are essential to modern life. From the battery in your iPhone to X-ray machines, rare earth minerals power our daily lives. Currently, China is responsible for 90% of rare earth mineral production. Policymakers are looking for ways to transition to low-carbon energy sources. But that can’t happen without a strong domestic supply chain to deliver these minerals. “It may take up to a decade of constant work to build out the mining and production chain for the U.S. to feel more confident that these critical supplies will be available. Expect policymakers to experience more sleepless nights in the coming years if U.S.-Chinese tensions continue to escalate.”
Security Experts Urge Making Domestic Mineral Processing a Priority – In an blog post on Real Clear Energy, former Marine Commandant Gen. Michael Hagee and former White House official Drew Horn write the materials and components for these batteries are still being shipped to the U.S. and to our allies from China, which still has a stranglehold on the vital—yet frequently overlooked—processing and refining step in the EV supply chain. “The development of this capability must be our top priority in this area.”

IN THE NEWS
Granholm Makes First Trip Outside DC to Houston – Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm made her first trip to Texas, and her first trip out of Washington, since she was confirmed in February, touring an Air Liquide hydrogen plant in La Porte Friday morning. Granholm called hydrogen "a huge opportunity" for the oil and gas sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
EIA: Highest Memorial Day Gas Prices Since 2014 – The EIA says the average retail price for regular gasoline in the United States on May 24, the Monday before the Memorial Day weekend, was $3.02 per gallon (gal), the highest gasoline price before Memorial Day since 2014, according to its weekly Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update. The average U.S. gasoline price on May 24 was $1.14/gal higher than a year ago. The American Automobile Association (AAA) expects more than 37 million people to take trips this Memorial Day weekend, traveling 50 miles or more from home between May 27 and May 31. Of those 37 million people, AAA expects 34 million of them to travel primarily by car, as opposed to planes, trains, or other travel modes. This automotive travel total marks a 52% increase from Memorial Day 2020, when only 23 million people traveled by automobile, the fewest since 2000, when AAA began estimating holiday travel.
Price Rising – Speaking of prices, they jumped 3.6% in April, the fastest pace in 13 years. The core price index, which [strips] out volatile food and fuel prices, rose 3.1% in the year through April — the fastest pace since 1992. Prices rose 0.7% compared with the prior month, the biggest increase in two decades. Central bankers and economists expect that pickup will probably fade with time as producers catch up with consumer demand and the boost from government stimulus disappears.
