Energy Update: Week of February 21st

Energy Update - February 21, 2023

Friends,

The 65th running of the Daytona 500, the most famous NASCAR Race on the circuit, was held this weekend, but while Ricky Stenhouse won the Big Race and auto-qualified for the playoffs later this year, the biggest winner was Annapolis-area Motorsports/X-Games legend Travis Pastrana, who finished 13th in the Truck Race Friday and 11th on Sunday in his first NASCAR effort. (He led the race at one point and was actually in 6th with two laps to go before being wrecked by Aric Almirola). And mark it: all MLB players have reported and Spring Training is underway as of TODAY.

First some interesting climate news: United Airlines and partners including Boeing and GE Aerospace launched a venture fund to back startups working on climate-friendly jet fuels, according to our friend David Gelles at the NYT. Speaking of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), DOE is having a webinar on progress toward meeting the SAF Grand Challenge tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.  And EPA’s PM NAAQS Public Hearings are underway today through Thursday.

Congress remains in the District Work period this week after yesterday’s President’s Day Holiday, but the Senate Environment Committee has already noticed a Wednesday March 1st renomination hearing for EPA Air Office Appointee Joe Goffman.

Other events this week include tomorrow’s CSIS annual visit from bp’s Spencer Dale for its Energy Outlook 2023 and a Carnegie Endowment for International Peace discussion Thursday afternoon on California, climate change and America's power grid featuring our friend Katherine Blunt of the WSJ, who wrote the book on it!!! (BTW, I have read it and it is GREAT)

And time to mark the Calendar: Next week, BloombergNEF and the Business Council for Sustainable Energy will release the 2023 Sustainable Energy in America Factbook on Tuesday February 28th at 2:00 at p.m. The Factbook details U.S. energy market trends and the 2023 edition will cover which emerging technologies made headway in the past year and whether high costs impacted clean energy investment and deployment.

Energy Sect. Granholm will be in Croatia on March 1st and 2nd for the 4th meeting of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (P-TECC). P-TECC is a DOE-led multilateral initiative that focuses on the rapid decarbonization of Central/Eastern European economies, helping strengthen energy security in the region, create business connections with U.S. companies and foster cooperation. SoCal Gas CEO Scott Drury is one of the business leaders attending.

CERA Week, the energy industry’s biggest event, is the following week, March 6th to March 10th in Houston. CERAWeek brings together global leaders to advance new ideas, insight and solutions to the biggest challenges facing the future of energy, the environment and climate. Speakers include White House Advisor John Podesta, former Energy Secretaries Ernest Moniz (now at EFI) and Dan Brouillette (now at Sempra Infrastructure), State’s Amos Hochstein, IEA’s Fatih Birol and dozens of energy CEOs. I will be there in my usual spot (if you know, you know).

And finally, SAFE has announced new speakers for its SAFE Summit: A Pathway to Electrification from Minerals to Market on March 28-29th in Washington, DC. The summit aims to seize the historical moment provided by IRA and Infrastructure law to find practical next solutions that will build out robust and reliable supply chains/supporting infrastructure for EVs and the broader energy transition. Joining Podesta (he is clearly on the speaking circuit) will be Nissan’s Ashwanti Gupta and deep-sea mining industry leader, The Metals Company CEO Gerald Barron, among other top leaders from the mining Industry.

FRANKLY SPOKEN

“I am genuinely a nerd about climate change. The implications are so dramatic, and there are all these tipping points that once you hit them they’re effectively irreversible."

Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines in an interview adding that he wanted his airline to be a leader in sustainable fuels.

““I’ve been doing renewables for 25 years, and I’m one of the more cynical people in the space. But I think there’s been a shift in the last few years. Airlines believe they are going to be held accountable, and their customers are saying they have to change.”"

Patrick Gruber, the chief executive of Gevo, a start-up based in Denver that is also making sustainable aviation fuel from ethanol and broke ground last year on a plant in South Dakota.

FROG BLOG

More Blog Debate on Gas Stoves:

Pro Gas Stove: Beloved Blue is Just Better – In a blog post for the Washington Examiner, author and environmental researcher Steve Goreham writes in the gas stove debate, the bottom line is that banning gas stoves will raise homeowner costs and reduce choices, without creating any tangible improvement in health.

Pro Electrification: Induction Stoves Just Work Better– In a blog post for Canary, RMI study author Brady Seals writes in matters of public health and climate science alike, long-term, evidence-based scientific research is the gold standard to help sort fact from fiction. In the case of gas stoves, the risks to both health and the climate are increasingly clear. She also adds induction cooktops perform leaps and bounds better than old-fashioned electric coil stoves.

IN THE NEWS

New Corporate Effort to Develop Sustainable Aviation Fuels – United Airlines and five corporate partners are launching a venture capital fund to invest in startup firms and technology developing and expanding the availability of sustainable aviation fuel, commonly referred to as SAF. The United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund will start with $100 million invested by United Airlines, Air Canada, Boeing, GE Aerospace, JPMorgan Chase, and Honeywell. The announcement comes as the aviation industry pushes to cut greenhouse gas emissions in order to meet more restrictive pollution standards. Our friend David Gelles has the exclusive details for the NY Times, including comments from leading SAF producer Gevo CEO Patrick Gruber.

Energy Storage Increasing to 2M Homes – The American Clean Power Association (ACP) today released its Clean Power Quarterly Market Report — Q4 2022, which shows that the U.S. wind, solar, and battery storage sectors installed a total of 9.6 gigawatts (GW) of utility-scale clean power capacity last quarter — enough to power the equivalent of 2 million American homes with affordable, domestic energy.

IEA Release 2023 Methane Tracker – The IEA’s Global Methane Tracker shows the oil and gas sector could slash emissions of potent greenhouse gas using only a fraction of its bumper income from the energy crisis. The IEA’s latest update of its Global Methane Tracker found that the global energy industry was responsible for 135 million tons of methane released into the atmosphere in 2022, only slightly below the record highs seen in 2019. Today, the energy sector accounts for around 40% of total methane emissions attributable to human activity, second only to agriculture. Methane is responsible for around 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution. It dissipates faster than carbon dioxide but is a much more powerful greenhouse gas during its short lifespan. Cutting methane emissions is one of the most effective ways to limit global warming and improve air quality in the near term. This year’s report also includes methane emissions from coal mines and measures to cut them by half.
